If cooked chicken could talk, the conversation might go something like this.
"Hello. My name is Chicken Diable.
I am not much to look at, but I taste really good...
Of course, it probably would help if I weren't served with such a monotone palette of foods and the dolphin plate is so. not. sexy."
Sigh.
However, one should never judge a chicken by its surroundings.
Pretty is as pretty does.
It's what's on the inside that matters.
Be open minded.
When that chicken is simmered in a sauce of shallots, vermouth, heavy cream and spicy grainy mustard, there is more to it than meets the eye.
Easy enough for a weeknight meal. Elegant enough for a weekend.
While not the most photogenic sides around, the balsamic roasted carrots & parsnips and rye focaccia rounded out the meal rather nicely. The empty plates bore evidence to that fact.
I am still scratching my head over the "diable" element of this recipe. Grainy mustard was not what I envisioned from the title. I was thinking hot peppers or something like that. Not mustard.
Not that I am complaining. I am a mustard kind of girl. No mayo for me on that turkey sandwich - mustard all the way.
This post participates in French Fridays with Dorie.
Post Script: Strong antibiotics may have been partially responsible for the talking chicken at the beginning of this post. That stuff has some wacky effects on the thinking process. Just sayin'

Agreed--I expected hot peppers, too. Don't know why it's not just called Mustard Chicken. Then again, that title is just as sexy as your dolphin plate, so "diable" it shall remain.
ReplyDeleteCher, I can always count on you for a Friday morning giggle! I think this one has gotten rave reviews all around!!! Hope you're feeling better. xo
ReplyDeleteLOL at the antibiotics making the chicken take!! And YUM - don't care what this looks like, it was SO good!
ReplyDeleteYour posts set the tone for fridays, and I love your style Cher! I couldn´t make this one, but I definitely will. I´m a mustard girl too. And that rye focaccia, I want the recipe...
ReplyDeleteLooks super delicious!
ReplyDeleteThis does sound good ... I think diable makes more sense when you figure that deviled eggs are mustardy too, right? What do I know ; p
ReplyDeleteClearly, you know a heckuva lot more than I do. The egg connection never crossed my mind...
DeleteReally now, the dolphin plate does a fine job of taming the "diable".....
ReplyDeleteThis was yummy, I agree!
I'm with you mustard, mustard and more mustard. A little cream and wine was nice too.
ReplyDeleteOnce, when Hubby and I were in Paris, we stopped at the Maille mustard shop and brought
ReplyDeletehome some fresh mustard that was poured into crocks of various sizes and wrapped to
travel. I read about that somewhere and had to have it. It was so fresh and delicious.
I think the mustard in this recipe makes all the difference. We truly enjoyed the dish and it is a
great fast food meal.
Yup, we are mustard people here too. And we also love talking chickens...the best kind. We also like dolphin plates so I think your meal is elegant and could be a trial run for your next fancy dinner party.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. This one wasn't so attractive, but more than made up for it from the very first bite. I truly adored this one, but I pretty much love anything with mustard.
ReplyDeleteDid you make the rye foccacia? I also love rye (rye toast is my usual breakfast), so would love to try that if you have the recipe posted. I'm a TWD dropout, so haven't done much baking lately. Have a great weekend!
I did make it - I had some rye pizza dough leftover that I repurposed into focaccia.
DeleteWe are opposites! I will gladly take mayo on turkey over mustard!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I think those French need to get some chilies in their life!
ReplyDeleteOh, no - are the antibiotics for you? Hope you're doing better, then! I agree about the mustard - I like mustard on just about everything, and the coarser the grain, the better. I, too, was expecting to hear about some super hot chicken. Or maybe for the French, mustard is just about as hot as they can take it....
ReplyDeleteI'm on the back end of my once every couple of years "knock me out flat" respiratory thingies. I am way better, thanks (and a whole lot more coherent)
DeleteI hope you are feeling better. Antibiotics can do weird things to you. This was a delicious dish. A family favorite.
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better, Cher. I love the look of your roasted root vegetables and focaccia with this dish - perfect for making sure none of that delicious sauce goes to waste.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed this, too!
ReplyDeleteJohn & I got to meet Mary tonight! It was so much fun - I felt like I'd known her forever.
That is wonderful! That is exactly what I would expect Mary to be like :-)
DeleteMy Trader Joe's mustard was mucho diablo- my sinus's still hurt. But boy was it worth it. We loved how amazing the taste was for such a simple, quick prep. Truly felt like "french" cooking. Boy those root veggies look fab, not to mention the focaccia...I am going to try baking some bread this weekend (this the season...).
ReplyDeleteSome of the best food, the food that gets cooked in homes and tastes the best, is the ugliest. Its taxing my sensibilities but lovingly filling my belly. I'm a mustard guy (which explains why I adore you so) so this one is a personal fave and I never get tired of it. Ever. Never.
ReplyDeleteI agree it wasn't the prettiest dish, but it SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteCher, I hope that you are feeling much better by now - I had been thinking of oven roasting some root vegetables too but once at the market, settled on the fresh spinach. Your plate does look delicious with the veggies and the rye focaccia and it is nice to read that you really enjoyed this easy and wonderful dish!
ReplyDeleteTake good care of yourself and have a nice weekend!
I love your chicken monologue. It's exactly what I would expect it to say. Such an unassuming dish! All that flavor is a pleasant surprise. Nice work with this one, Cher!
ReplyDeleteThis was a good one wasn't it even if it doesn't take the best picture. Hope you're feeling better Cher!
ReplyDeleteI guess I am like your chicken--not photogenic but good on the inside. OMG, did I just say that? It's that I am stir-crazy and have spring fever. Guess I may need antibiotics...
ReplyDeleteYour root veggies look yummy and you've got a nice looking sauce.
this is such an innovative chicken dish my friend though can't say I have any experience photographing it ;)
ReplyDeleteCheers
CCU
Funny post Cher! I haven’t made mine yet, since I’m on the road, heading back to NJ. I really am looking forward to this one. Everyone seems to have really enjoyed it. I’m also a mustard kind of girl and this sauce looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteHope the antibiotics did the trick! Have a great weekend!
You're very creative, Cher, when you're on heavy-duty Meds. Whatever you have, I hope it's winding down and that you will be enjoying good health soon. Just seventeen days until Spring and I think all of you who live in the Northeast will be ready for the sunshine. I'm a mustard girl myself and enjoyed every bite of this. And, bagged and store-purchased frozen french fries, brushed liberally through that sauce - 2 DEYE 4. Thanks for giving me permission to go-FFs, every meal, everyday, if I wish. Get better, my friend.
ReplyDeleteYou're so clever. :) Lovely dish!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon! I'm a wimp when I am sick. I'd be in bed ordering in- so your dolphin plate and talking chicken are totally acceptable! I really liked this dish. I would definitely make it again with chicken. Your roasted root veggies look and sound so good. I could eat those all the time!
ReplyDeleteI liked this more than I thought I would. I do not like mustard but it made a great sauce!!!!
ReplyDeleteSome dishes just aren't photogenic. I really liked this one too. Easy enough for a weeknight but elegant enough for company is a great combination!
